A French 19th Century Carved Giltwood and Parcel Gilt Centre Stool

19th century
For Sale by Jeckyll & Co
Description

A sophisticated and useful piece of furniture, of sepentine and concave form. It would work well in a traditional drawing room setting, or master bedroom. However with a different cover it would add style to a more relaxed living space.

Structurally sound, some typical losses to the surface gilding around to the extremities. Upholstery with the odd isolated mark, braiding missing to the lower edge.

Reliable transport throughout the UK can be easily arranged at cost price. If you have any questions, require more images etc., please let me know

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A centre stool, often called a tabouret, is a low upholstered seating piece crafted to be positioned centrally within a salon or drawing room during the 19th century, drawing inspiration from Louis XV Rococo design.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved hardwoods such as beech or walnut, finished with gesso and hand-applied gold leaf, and fitted with webbed upholstery stuffed with natural horsehair.

Authentic period examples demonstrate signs of hand-carved joinery underneath, age-related craquelure within the gesso layer, and natural wear patterns on high-relief areas showing red or grey bole beneath the gilding.

An antique giltwood stool can be incorporated into modern settings as a decorative accent at the foot of a bed, as occasional seating in a drawing room, or paired alongside minimalist upholstery to add architectural texture.

Giltwood frames should be dusted exclusively with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or solvents, while delicate fabric upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a low-suction soft brush attachment.
