Japanese cloisonne, known as shippo, reached its artistic peak during the Meiji period, influenced by Chinese techniques but refined with distinct Japanese precision and natural motifs.

Cloisonne is crafted by soldering thin metal wires onto a copper or bronze base to form compartments, which are then filled with coloured glass enamel pastes and fired multiple times.

Authentic antique pieces often feature visible weight, hand-ground enamel surfaces with minor pitting or fine air bubbles, and thin brass or copper wire outlines rather than machine-stamped uniformity.

An antique censer can be placed on a bookshelf or mantelpiece as a focal point, contrasting its intricate, colourful enamel patterns against neutral, minimalist contemporary surroundings.

Clean cloisonne gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid scratching the delicate enamel surface, and keep it away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity.
