Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Sterling silver boxes have been produced for centuries, often utilised by the affluent classes to store tobacco, snuff, visiting cards, or personal jewellery. Their design frequently reflected the dominant artistic movements of their period, ranging from ornate Victorian chasing to sleek Art Deco geometric patterns.

These pieces are typically fabricated from solid sterling silver, denoted by specific hallmarks indicating purity, assay office, and maker. Construction methods often involved sheet metal fabrication, hinges, and hand-engraved surface ornamentation such as engine-turning.

Authentic pieces generally feature official hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, including a standard mark like the lion passant for British silver, a makers mark, and a date letter. Natural tarnish, minor surface wear, and traditional construction joints also help verify age.

A vintage silver box functions as a sophisticated accent piece on a coffee table, bookshelf, or office desk. It provides practical concealed storage while adding metallic contrast and reflective texture to contemporary spaces.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically using a specialised non-abrasive silver cloth to remove tarnish without damaging the surface details. Storing the item in a stable, dry environment away from direct sunlight helps minimise future oxidisation.
