Antique Uzbek Lakai tribe ilgich, dowry wall hanging for the yurt.

Circa 1900.

Ilgich are embroidered hangings that usually formed part of a brides dowry; they are talismanic and considered to be protective. This example is embroidered in silk on a red Mogul cotton ground.

The condition is good with some very slight age related wear.

An ilgich is a square embroidered decorative textile created by nomadic Lakai women of Central Asia, traditionally made as part of a bridal dowry to adorn yurts or homes.

These textiles were typically constructed using silk threads worked in tiny chain stitch (ilmme) or cross-stitch onto felt, wool, or cotton grounds, often finished with woven borders and fringe.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display natural vegetable dyes, bold curvilinear or solar motifs, dense silk chain stitching, and slight irregularities inherent to hand-loomed and hand-dyed nomadic production.

A traditional embroidered panel can be custom-mounted inside a museum-quality shadow box frame or suspended from a conservation-grade velvet slant board to preserve the fabric while displaying its colours.
