Pair Wedgwood Yellow Jasper Three Colour Candlesticks, C. 1900.

Description

Rare pair of Wedgwood yellow jasper, three colour candlesticks, c. 1900. The yellow ground candlesticks, sprigged with black jasper relief oval medallions, containing Classical figures, above rose garlands, suspended from rams heads. The rims with continuous lappet, floral, and beaded bands.

The circular foot rims, applied with an acanthus leaf motif.

Both candlesticks set upon square pedestal feet, decorated with a continuous band of leaves and berries, in black jasper.

Impressed WEDGWOOD, ETRURIA, ENGLAND to the bases.

Height – 23 cm, 9 1/8”.

Width – 10 cm, 4”.

Depth – 10 cm, 4”.

Condition – Minute chips to the corners of the pedestal bases. Otherwise in excellent, unrestored condition.

Yellow jasper, along with claret and some other coloured jaspers, was more costly and difficult to produce than the standard blue jasper, and therefore only used in limited production runs.

Jasperware is a dense, unglazed stoneware developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. It features a matte finish and is famously decorated with raised ceramic reliefs, often depicting classical themes and figures.

Three-colour jasperware is crafted from unglazed stoneware using coloured slips or dip layers to achieve distinct background shades. The decorative elements are formed separately in moulds using contrasting white or coloured clay slips, then manually applied using a sprigging technique before firing.

Authentic pieces carry impressed marks on the underside, such as WEDGWOOD in clean serif capital letters, often alongside date codes or batch letters. Original sprigged reliefs display sharp detail, smooth hand-finishing, and tight adherence to the vessel surface without excess glue or gaps.
