Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bonheur de jour is a specialised type of small writing desk introduced in 18th-century France and widely produced throughout the Victorian era. Characterised by a raised back section incorporating small drawers, cupboards, or shelves, it was traditionally designed for personal correspondence in private sitting rooms or bedrooms.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used fine hardwoods such as figured walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. Decorative features often included floral marquetry inlays using contrasting fruitwoods, gilt-brass ormolu mounts, leather-inset writing surfaces, and mirrored door panels.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on small drawers, cast brass hardware showing subtle signs of age, and natural wear patterns on timber surfaces. Veneered panels such as burr or figured walnut typically exhibit fine age craze lines within the original shellac finish.

A bonheur de jour can serve as a focal point in a bedroom nook, hallway, or living room alcove. Modern styling involves pairing the desk with a contemporary neutral accent chair or minimalist desk accessories to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Keep walnut furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber movement and veneer bleaching. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish and brass fittings.
