Description

A strange and very unusual sterling silver cup / bowl. It is unmarked but tests as sterling silver - I would date it to c1880 most likely commissioned. It has been unusually designed incorporating three images possibly all representing different images of the Devil, between these are fruit (possibly symbolising the forbidden fruit of the Garde of Eden). The rim and inside has been gilded the base set with a Queen Anne silver coin dating to c1702-1714. It is in superb condition having no dings splits holes or repairs. It measures approx. 3.25 inches (9cm) across by 2.5 inches tall and weighs 166 grams. A very interesting possibly occult piece.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Coin inset silver vessels incorporate actual historical currency into their design, a practice that gained popularity during the 19th century as a way to celebrate heritage and numismatic interest.

These pieces are typically crafted from solid sterling silver, often featuring hand-chased or embossed ornamentation, parcel-gilding on the interior, and securely mounted historical coins.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks for assay office, makers marks, and silver purity, alongside inspecting the coin mountings for period-correct soldering and natural oxidisation.

Placing historical metalware on a mantelpiece or side table introduces textural contrast and a sense of curated history to modern spaces.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly with a non-abrasive silver cloth to maintain its patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage gilt interiors and historical coin details.
