Brass Club Fender

1900 - 1920
Description

This finely proportioned club fender exemplifies the elegance and practicality associated with Edwardian interior furnishings of the early 20th century. Intended for placement before a fireplace, the piece combines generous seating with an architectural brass framework, reflecting the period’s emphasis on comfort, order, and refined craftsmanship.

The design comprises two opposing L-shaped seats, deeply padded and finished with traditional button tufting. The seats are upholstered in dark leather, lending a rich, understated character while offering durability suited to hearth-side use. The leather’s softly worn surface enhances the historical character of the piece, complementing the warm tones of the brass structure.

The frame is constructed in brass, raised on a series of slender, turned uprights set into solid rectangular bases. A continuous arched brass rail spans between the two seating elements, a defining feature of the club fender form, originally serving both as a visual boundary to the fireplace and a unifying structural element. The restrained curvature introduces a sense of movement while maintaining classical symmetry.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A club fender is a low surround placed around a fireplace hearth, designed with raised, padded corner seats supported by metal posts or spindles to provide additional fireside seating.

Traditional club fenders are constructed from solid brass, polished steel, or cast iron, paired with leather or heavy woven fabric upholstery over horsehair padding.

Authentic period examples feature heavy cast or tubular metal bases, natural surface oxidisation, hand-tufted upholstery, and solid screw or rivet joinery along the support columns.

Position the fender symmetrically around a working or decorative fireplace hearth to frame the firebox, pairing it with neutral upholstery or contemporary artwork to balance the traditional brass metalwork.

Clean the brass structure regularly with a soft microfiber cloth, apply a specialised brass cleaner to remove tarnish when necessary, and vacuum the upholstered seats using a soft brush attachment.
