South West Persian Hand Knotted Bag Face with Central Medallion 67cm X 67cm

1920 - 1940
Description

This South-West Persian hand-knotted bag face is a striking example of traditional tribal weaving, originally made as the decorative front panel of a nomadic storage bag. Woven in wool using time-honoured techniques, it features a bold central medallion framed by geometric motifs typical of south-west Iran.

Bag faces like this were created for everyday use within nomadic households and are now highly sought after as decorative textile art. Their graphic composition and rich, earthy colours make them ideal for wall display, layering over furniture, or styling as a distinctive accent in both modern and traditional interiors.

Each piece is entirely hand-knotted, resulting in subtle irregularities that speak to its age, authenticity and handmade character. No two examples are the same.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Persian bag face, historically known as a khorjin face, is the woven front panel of a traditional double saddlebag created by nomadic tribes in Persia for carrying goods.

These textiles are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool on a wool warp and weft foundation, dyed using natural plant and mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces feature hand-tied knots, geometric tribal motifs, slight irregularities in shape or weave density, and raw edges where the panel was detached from the original saddlebag structure.

Small tribal textile panels can be mounted on walls as tapestry art, placed on side tables, or framed to add texture and historic geometry to modern spaces.

Keep the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, vacuum gently using a suction attachment rather than a rotating brush, and spot clean with cool water and neutral detergent.
