This small Georgian oak bureau dates from around 1800 and embodies traditional English country house style. The piece is rendered in warm brown oak with solid sides, complemented by brass hardware including round drawer knobs and keyhole escutcheons. The slanted fall-front flap opens on pull-out lopers to create a practical writing surface, revealing an interior fitted with pigeon holes and ten small stationery drawers. Below the desk section sit three long graduated drawers, all finished with cockbeaded edges. The base incorporates a moulded trim and rests on shaped bracket feet. The dimensions measure 109 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. In a modern home, this compact bureau serves as a functional writing desk and storage unit in a study, home office, or bedroom. The writing surface provides a dedicated workspace for laptop use or correspondence, while the internal stationery drawers and external long drawers offer ample storage for papers, stationery, and household items. The traditional proportions allow the piece to sit comfortably against a wall in smaller rooms without dominating the floor space, blending practical organisation with period character.

A Georgian oak bureau is a fall-front writing desk produced during the Georgian period (17141830), characteristically featuring a sloping hinged lid that opens to reveal internal drawers and pigeonholes set above a chest of drawers.

These bureaus were constructed primarily from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, using hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer linings, brass escutcheons, and sliding wooden lopers to support the writing slope.

Authentic pieces feature evidence of period craftsmanship, including hand-sawn backboards, irregular hand-cut dovetails, original brass lock plates, and natural wear along the lopers and plinth base.

A Georgian bureau functions effectively in a hallway, bedroom, or living room alcove, serving as a compact workspace when open and a neat storage cabinet when closed.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement and cracking, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber surface.
