A Fine 18th Century Crossbanded Oak Bureau with Stepped Interior & Secret Drawers

18th century
Description

An attractive early 18th-century crossbanded oak bureau, in country house condition, dating to circa 1720. The fall-front opens to reveal a beautifully stepped interior fitted with small drawers, pigeonholes, and secret compartments – a fine example of period craftsmanship. Below are two short drawers over two long drawers, providing excellent storage. The bureau stands on shaped bracket feet and retains correct later brass handles in keeping with the period style.

The oak has developed a warm, rich patina, highlighting the quality of the crossbanding and dovetail joinery. Perfect for collectors of early Georgian furniture, this antique bureau combines functionality with charm and would make an elegant addition to a study, library, or traditional interior.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century oak bureau is a piece of Georgian writing furniture characterized by a sloped fall-front lid opening to reveal a fitted interior of small drawers and pigeonholes, set above a lower chest of drawers.

Pieces from this era typically feature solid oak primary construction, hand-cut dovetail joints, crossbanded veneer borders, and hand-forged brass teardrop or batwing handles secured with original iron locks.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-planed secondary timbers, irregular dovetailing, age-appropriate shrinkage to drawer linings, original keyhole escutcheons, and natural wear patterns on the bracket feet.

An oak bureau can be placed in a home office, hallway, or living area, serving as a functional workspace or decorative storage unit alongside contemporary lighting and neutral upholstery.

Preservative care involves regular dusting with a soft cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax. Avoid placing the wood near direct heat sources or in fluctuating humidity to prevent movement and cracking.
