Kokichi Mikimoto successfully created the worlds first cultured pearls in Japan in 1893, revolutionising the fine jewellery industry. Throughout the mid-twentieth century, the house of Mikimoto produced delicate sterling silver brooches set with high-grade cultured Akoya pearls, characterized by fluid ribbon and botanical forms.

Classic pearl brooches from mid-century makers combine sterling silver settings, often marked with a 925 purity stamp or maker-specific hallmark, with cultured saltwater Akoya pearls prized for their lustre and symmetry.

Authentic Mikimoto pieces typically feature the makers markan engraved M inside a stylized clam shell outlinealongside silver purity marks such as S or SILVER on the reverse of the setting.
