Description

A magnificent Art Deco burr walnut pedestal desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1920-30’s.

The quality is outstanding, this is a large and impressive size. There are beautiful burr walnut grain patterns on the top and drawer fronts, the top edges are also cross banded. There is an inset leather writing surface in the centre of the top, this is beautifully finished on all sides, so can be used as a free standing item. The stainless steel handles are also beautifully crafted, they contrast nicely with the walnut.

We have had this stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is superb throughout for its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco furniture, emerging in the 1920s and 1930s, is characterised by sleek geometric shapes, streamlined forms, and the use of luxurious materials such as burr walnut, chrome, and exotic veneers.

Pieces from this period typically feature solid wood frames with highly figured decorative veneers like walnut, applied over sturdy secondary timbers, often complemented by contrasting banding and metal hardware.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate construction techniques, traditional joinery, original hardware such as chrome handles, and natural ageing patterns in the timber and finish.

Such a desk functions as a striking focal point in a home study or open-plan living space, pairing well with minimalist seating and neutral walls to let the distinctive wood grain stand out.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and applying occasional appropriate wax polish.
