We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

This pair of 19th-century Swedish Gustavian commodes is constructed from pine with a matt black painted finish and brass hardware. Each chest of drawers features a rectangular top with canted corners, a moulded edge, dentil detailing, and three pine-lined graduating drawers with later brass drop handles, escutcheons, and cartouche-shaped moulded panel fronts. The pieces are raised on turned tapered feet and display minor age splits to the top surfaces, inactive woodworm evidence to the back boards, and faded later paint. Each commode measures 73 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 43.8 cm deep. These chests of drawers are suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or bedroom for everyday storage use.

19th-century Swedish commodes typically reflect Neoclassical and Gustavian influences, characterised by clean geometric lines, understated carved moulding, and painted finishes. These pieces were designed to maximise interior light and provide practical storage using locally sourced timber.

These commodes were predominantly crafted from native softwoods such as pine or fir, which were then painted or milk-washed. Hardware typically consisted of brass keyhole escutcheon plates and cast brass drop handles or ring pulls.

Authentic pieces display layered historical paint finishes showing natural wear around keyholes, handles, and lower edges. Construction details typically include hand-dovetailed drawer joints, pegged framing, and pine secondary timber behind drawer fronts.

A pair of dark painted commodes functions effectively as substantial bedside tables or symmetry-anchoring side storage in a living area. Topped with table lamps or contemporary artwork, the contrast between dark paint and lighter walls creates a distinct visual anchor.

Maintenance requires keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent wood shrinkage or cracking. Dusting with a soft dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleansers preserves the integrity of historical paint layers.
