This impressive large antique brass charger originates from the Anglo-Indian period around 1890. Rendered in a warm gold colour, the brass object has an octagonal rim and intricate hand-engraved surface decoration. Concentric circular panels feature rows of hand-engraved animal bands depicting various creatures, birds, and animals alongside dense foliate scrollwork. The outer borders show larger engraved animals such as elephants and deer, while the inner circles display swirling animal motifs arranged around a central pinwheel pattern. There is a visible hanging loop affixed near the top edge, and the metal shows soft tarnishing and age wear across the low-relief engraving. The charger measures 2 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 61 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this striking wall charger works well in a gentleman's library or study. It is designed to be hung securely above a sideboard as a statement decorative wall hanging. The piece suits traditional interiors, colonial revival schemes, or eclectic living spaces seeking a textured metal accent.

FAQs

Originally created as large serving platters or display pieces for banquets, chargers evolved into significant ornamental metalwork items. In 19th-century Anglo-Indian and Middle Eastern traditions, hand-engraved brass chargers were crafted both for domestic ceremonial display and for export to European markets.

These items are typically constructed from sheet brass that is hand-hammered or cast. The surface decoration is executed using chasing and engraving techniques, where steel punches create detailed relief patterns, often followed by controlled oxidisation to highlight the recessed areas.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-worked irregularities, such as minute variations in the punched details and tool marks on the reverse side. Natural age wear, subtle surface oxidation in the deeper grooves, and a heavy, solid construction distinguish genuine antiques from modern machine-stamped reproductions.

A large brass charger works effectively as wall art above a console table or sideboard, bringing metallic warmth and texture to neutral schemes. Alternatively, placing it flat on a table centrepiece or displaying it vertically on a plate stand creates an engaging focal point.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent dirt accumulation in the engraved details. Avoid abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that can strip the natural aged patina; if necessary, clean gently with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly.
