Baluch rugs are traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the borderlands of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Prayer rugs from this group typically feature a distinctive mihrab arch design meant to orient the worshipper towards Mecca.

These textiles are hand-knotted using handspun wool for both the pile and the foundation structure, sometimes incorporating dark brown or black wool warp threads. Natural vegetable dyes were historically employed to achieve deep, rich colour palettes featuring earthy browns, reds, and indigos.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the handle, knot density, natural dye variations, and wool quality on the reverse side. Antique pieces often display slight irregularities in symmetry and abrasash, reflecting their nomadic handwoven production.

An antique prayer rug can be utilized as a small accent floor covering, hung on a wall as a textile artwork, or layered over a larger neutral sisal rug to add texture and historical depth to a space.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and utilizing a breathable underlay to prevent sliding and fibre abrasion.
