FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province. The name originates from the port of Imari, from where these items were shipped to European markets beginning in the seventeenth century.

Imari wares are crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay. The classic palette is achieved using underglaze cobalt blue decoration, followed by high firing, and subsequently finished with overglaze iron-red enamel and gold gilding before a second lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces generally display spur marks on the base from kiln firing supports, slight irregularities in hand-applied enamels, and age-appropriate surface wear to the overglaze gilding and enamelling. The foot rim is typically unglazed, revealing a fine porcelain body.

Imari ceramics are commonly styled on mantelpieces, integrated into gallery walls with brass plate hangers, or arranged within open bookshelves and sideboards to introduce rich colour and historic interest.

Care should be taken to clean the surface using lukewarm water and a mild detergent applied with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical solvents, and dishwashers, as these can strip or damage sensitive overglaze enamels and gilding.
