A Suzani is a hand-embroidered decorative textile traditionally created in Central Asian regions such as Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Derived from the Persian word for needle, these panels were historically crafted by brides and their families as part of a dowry to symbolise prosperity and union.

Suzanis are typically constructed from narrow strips of hand-spun cotton or linen fabric stitched together prior to embroidery. The intricate motifs are worked in silk or wool threads using primary needlework techniques such as chain stitch, couching stitch, and buttonhole stitch.

Authentic antique Suzanis display hand-drawn foundation lines on the base fabric, slight misalignment of patterns where joined narrow strips meet, and natural dye variations across the silk threads. Modern synthetic reproductions usually feature uniform colours, machine stitching, and single-piece backings.

An antique Suzani can be mounted onto fabric frames and displayed as statement wall art above a headboard or sofa. Large embroidered panels can also be draped across upholstered seating or used as decorative bed covers to introduce color and historic pattern.
