Description

A wonderful pair of Bessarabian Kilims, dating from 1920 and in excellent original condition.  Beautiful floral elements to replicate barley, poppies, and various other flowers.  Using soft greens, pinks, pale blues and greens with some light orange hues, to create the prettiest pair of kilims.  Rare to find a pair of antique Bessarabian kilims in these lovely smaller sizes.  Each kilim measures 230 x 148 cm.

Bessarabian rugs and carpets are the commonly given name for rugs in pile and tapestry technique originating in Ukraine and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Some scholars will classify flat-woven carpets as Bessarabian, while referring to knotted-pile carpets as Ukrainian. They are predominantly from an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania. Produced under late Ottoman rule, they stand right on the cusp of European and Oriental carpet weaving.

Bessarabian kilims originate from the Bessarabia region in Eastern Europe, produced during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are renowned for combining regional folk weaving techniques with French floral designs inspired by Aubusson tapestries.

These rugs are hand-woven flatweave textiles made using pure wool yarns spun on wool or cotton warps. The flat tapestry weave creates a reversible, pileless structure with distinct geometric or botanical motifs.

Authentic pieces feature flat tapestry construction rather than knotted pile, stylised floral or foliate patterns, soft vegetable-dyed colours, and characteristic wavy or serrated outer borders.

A pair of matching flatweave rugs can be placed symmetrically on either side of a bed, positioned together to anchor a large sitting room, or layered over neutral natural-fibre floor coverings.
