An epergne is an elaborate dining table centrepiece popular during the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries, designed to display fruits, sweetmeats, or flowers. It features a main central bowl surrounded by radiating arms that hold smaller subsidiary baskets or dishes.

Authentic silver epergnes are constructed from solid sterling silver or silver plate, featuring structural cast wirework and pierced or shaped bowls. Sterling silver examples bear official assay hallmarks, including a makers mark, town mark, purity mark, and date letter.

Art Nouveau silver epergnes feature sinuous, organic lines, whiplash curves, and stylized floral or natural motifs. Construction typically incorporates flowing wirework supports rather than rigid classical columns, alongside undulating rim borders.

An antique silver epergne functions as a focal point on a formal dining table, a sideboard, or a marble mantelpiece. Modern interiors often display these pieces unadorned to emphasize structural metalwork or filled with seasonal botanicals.

Sterling silver should be cleaned using a specialized silver polish and soft cotton cloth to remove tarnish while preserving the natural patina in detailed recessed areas. Avoid abrasive chemicals or dishwashers, and store items in anti-tarnish cloth bags when not on display.
