Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Hand-knotted wool pile on wool foundation: traditional nomadic weaving technique.
Triple linked diamond medallions with bird motifs: classic Khamseh tribal pattern.
Indigo and madder palette with gentle abrash: hand-dyed small batch wool.
Even, honest low pile across the field: normal wear over a century.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1910 antique Khamseh carpet from the tribal Persian tradition is made from wool dyed with natural dyes. The piece exhibits an indigo blue field filled with stylized bird motifs, diamond medallions, and geometric filler ornaments, all framed by step-pinioned borders in terracotta, cream, and mustard tones. Visible details include fringed ends along the shorter edges and minor wear consistent with an early twentieth-century date. Measuring 189 cm high by 125 cm wide and 0.5 cm deep, it provides a practical floor covering for a hallway, study, or living space. Placed on a floor in the home, this textile adds a rich palette of terracotta and indigo to traditional or eclectic interiors.

FAQs

Khamseh carpets were woven by the Khamseh Confederation, a group of five nomadic tribes in the Fars province of southern Persia established during the nineteenth century. Their weaving tradition combines influences from Arab, Turkic, and Persian heritage, resulting in distinctive geometric and zoomorphic designs.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft. Colors were traditionally derived from natural vegetable and mineral dyes, including madder for reds, indigo for deep blues, and pomegranate rinds for yellows.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical or symmetrical hand-tied knots on a wool foundation, often resulting in a slightly pliable handle. Signature visual indicators include repeating diamond medallions, murgh (stylized bird) motifs, density of secondary filler ornaments, and minor weave irregularities characteristic of nomadic looms.

A Khamseh rug works as a grounding focal point in contemporary, traditional, or eclectic settings. Its rich terracottas and deep blues pair well with dark wood furniture, leather upholstery, neutral linen sofas, and architectural metal accents.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating power brush to protect the pile. Rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear and light exposure, use a quality underlay to prevent slipping, and clean spills immediately with cold water and a clean cloth before seeking professional rug restoration.
