Description

This is a good early 20th century Kamseh carpet in really super condition dating from around 1910. The carpet has a very attractive colour palette with an indigo field of birds, animals and other tribal motifs centred by three hooked medallions and framed by mutliple borders and barber poles. The detail in the weaving is very good for this type of rug and it is a very practical size at 189cm by 125cm

It is in excellent condition ready for use in the home.

Khamseh carpets were woven by the Khamseh Confederation, a group of five nomadic tribes in the Fars province of southern Persia established during the nineteenth century. Their weaving tradition combines influences from Arab, Turkic, and Persian heritage, resulting in distinctive geometric and zoomorphic designs.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft. Colors were traditionally derived from natural vegetable and mineral dyes, including madder for reds, indigo for deep blues, and pomegranate rinds for yellows.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical or symmetrical hand-tied knots on a wool foundation, often resulting in a slightly pliable handle. Signature visual indicators include repeating diamond medallions, murgh (stylized bird) motifs, density of secondary filler ornaments, and minor weave irregularities characteristic of nomadic looms.
