Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French cylinder bureau, or bureau a cylindre, is a writing desk featuring a curved, quarter-cylinder wooden lid that rolls back into the carcase to reveal writing surfaces and interior drawers. Popularised in 18th-century France during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, this style combines functional security with decorative marquetry and gilt-bronze mounts.

These bureaux are typically constructed with oak or pine carcases covered in fine exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, rosewood, and mahogany. Decorative elements feature elaborate floral or geometric marquetry and parquetry, trimmed with chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and brass gallery edging.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut marquetry veneers, finely chased ormolu mounts with gilding wear consistent with age, and hand-dovetailed drawer joints. High-end 19th-century makers, such as Francois Linke or Maison Emile Zwiener, often stamped their name or lock plates on the gilded metalwork or carcase frame.

Position the bureau as a focal piece against a neutral wall in a study, hallway, or drawing room. Pair it with contemporary artwork or structured modern lighting to contrast the ornate woodwork and metallic brass accents.

Keep the desk in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, and avoid liquid polishes or abrasive cleaners on the gilt-bronze mounts.
