Art Nouveau Copper and Brass Fire Fender C. 1890

19th century
Description

A particularly good quality copper and brass fire fender with beautiful and elaborately cast sinuous solid brass corner spandrels of Art Nouveau design and a lovely planished copper front panel all set on flattened and beaded brass bun feet. In excellent original condition without damage and of a good large size, and with only minor and superficial marks and small dings consistent with age and careful use.

In the 19th century most of the rooms in a house had a chimney for open fires and the fender would be placed to denote the hearth and stop logs rolling off and reaching the rug or soft furnishings.

The fender is shown here with a pair of early 20th century brass firedogs and a duck basket grate, these are not included in the sale price but are available separately.

Dimensions are:

47.5 inches wide, 14.75 inches deep and 6.5 inches tall.

For metric please multiply by 2.5

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging in the late 19th century, Art Nouveau fire fenders were designed as decorative metal borders placed around a fireplace hearth to contain embers and coal dust while incorporating organic, sinuous design elements typical of the period.

These items were typically constructed from sheet brass, copper, or wrought iron, featuring hand-hammered textures, riveted joints, cast brass mounts, and stylized corner supports.

Authentic period pieces display natural patina, hand-finished metalwork, asymmetric or whiplash decorative motifs, and signs of age such as minor oxidisation or light wear to the base where it met the hearth.

A metal fire fender can frame a non-working fireplace filled with candles, decorative logs, or potted greenery, bridging traditional architectural features with contemporary aesthetic styling.

Preserve metal fenders by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a microcrystalline wax to protect against tarnishing, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers that strip historical patina.
