Antique Kirman - Small Rug

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This Kirman rug has a profound beauty within its simple design. A visceral midnight blue dominates the majority of the background, whilst lighter striations along the ground level and skyline glow like subtle brush strokes of a painter. A couple of hand-drawn birds perch on the symbolic 'tree of life,' that produces an abundance of delicate leaves, plant buds and majestic flower heads. The different stages of development shown here adds a touch of realism to this idyllic garden scene, in a rug that proves even the smallest physical constraints are no match for the boundless power of creative imagination. Would make a great wall hanging.

This antique Persian Kirman rug dates from 1870 and follows a traditional wool and cotton construction with a hand-knotted finish. The dark indigo field supports a central tree of life motif rendered in shades of cream and crimson, populated by perching birds amidst blossoming flowers and intricate foliage. Visible details include corrosion on the brown areas, hand-drawn bird figures, and a fringed edge border along the navy blue background. The piece measures 70 cm high by 54 cm wide. Suitable for use in an English country house interior, the textile functions effectively as a decorative wall hanging to introduce traditional Persian artistry into a living space or hallway. The compact proportions allow placement on various wall surfaces or display spaces where the bird and blossom pattern can be appreciated closely.

FAQs

Originating from the city of Kerman in south-eastern Persia, Kirman rugs are recognised for their high knot density, intricate botanical patterns, and pictorial themes such as tree of life and bird motifs.

These textiles are hand-knotted using wool on a cotton warp and weft foundation, employing asymmetrical Persian knots to achieve precise, detailed pictorial graphics.

Authentic examples typically feature cotton foundations with a double-weft construction, saturated natural dyes including indigo and cochineal red, and curved botanical or animal figures.

Small-scale antique rugs function effectively placed beneath occasional tables, layered over larger neutral flatweave carpets, or mounted on walls as textile art.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug periodically to equalise tread wear, and clean liquid spills immediately with cold water and an absorbent cloth.
