Japanese bronze okimono of a wolf, signed, c. 1890, Meiji Period. The study of a wolf, well cast, and modelled prowling. He has glass eyes, and his hair well delineated.

Bearing the original patination.

In the manner of Genryusai Seiya.

Incised two character signature to the underside.

Length – 48 cm, 19”.

Height – 22 cm, 8 3/4”.

Condition – No damage. No repair.

An okimono is a Japanese decorative sculpture designed specifically for display in Tokonoma alcoves or interior spaces. During the Meiji Period (18681912), Japanese metalworkers transitioned from crafting sword fittings to creating detailed bronze sculptures, frequently depicting animals with realistic proportions and textures.

Traditional Japanese bronze okimono were typically produced using the lost-wax (cire perdue) casting technique. Artisans hand-carved a wax model, encased it in mould material, melted the wax out, and poured molten bronze into the cavity before hand-chasing the fine surface details and applying chemical patination.

Authentic Meiji bronzes feature precise hand-finished details, such as finely chiselled fur or feathers, distinct weight due to solid metal composition, and genuine age-related surface patination. Many pieces also bear incised or cast artist signatures (mei) on the underside.
