Originating in Vienna during the late nineteenth century, cold-painted bronzes were created by founding workshops that specialised in realistic miniature sculptures. Unlike traditional bronzes, these pieces were decorated after casting with oil-based paint without firing.

These items were cast in solid bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by hand-chasing to create detailed textures. Multi-layered paint, known as cold paint, was applied directly to the metal surface once cool.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise casting detail, heavy density for their size, and natural wear to the painted surface, particularly on exposed high points. Many original examples feature maker marks, cast stamps, or specific numerals underneath.
