Antique Caucasian Marasali Prayer Rug

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This Caucasian "Black" Marasali Shirvan is very finely woven and a well-formed classic. It is dated 1302, which translates to 1884. Wavy ribbons are prevalent across all four borders, helping to adorn the softly-drawn blossoms and enigmatic polygons. This works as an effective contrast to the more rugged central field, which is made up of an array of serrated botehs that glow on the dark indigo-blue ground. These playful motifs are compactly positioned within the sharp frame of the mihrab, giving this prayer rug a sense of order despite the use of varying textures. Overall, this is a great collectors piece to display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the Shirvan region of the Caucasus, Marasali prayer rugs are traditional hand-knotted textiles distinguished by a central arch or mihrab motif, often filled with stylized floral or boteh patterns.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton foundation, utilising natural dyes to achieve rich terracotta, navy blue, and ivory hues.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied symmetrical knots, natural dye variations known as abrash, a repeated boteh pattern within the arched field, and multiple distinct geometric borders.

A Caucasian prayer rug can be displayed as a framed or mounted wall hanging, layered over neutral natural-fibre carpets, or placed in a study or entry hall to add historic pattern.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush, rotate periodically to balance light exposure, and consult professional textile conservators for periodic cleaning.
