This early 20th-century Central Asian tribal ceremonial horse or saddle cover originates from the Lakai tribe of Uzbekistan and dates to circa 1920. Made from silk, cotton, and wool, the textile functions as textile wall art and displays a soft grey ground adorned with vibrant multicolour and yellow boteh motifs, solar symbols, and floral motifs. A decorative fringe border finishes the edges, complemented by geometric double-line borders and rows of small patterned panels along the lower edge. The piece measures 122 cm high, 116 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this textile serves as an eclectic wall hanging displayed above a sideboard, introducing a Glastonbury Boho design vibe to an interior space. The embroidered horse cover was historically used on special occasions such as weddings, and today provides a striking focal point in a living room, hallway, or study. The construction incorporates a cotton lining replaced in Kabul in 2006, while the surface exhibits silk embroidery with classic Lakai designs and colourful tassel fringe trim.

A Lakai saddle cover is a traditional embroidered textile crafted by the semi-nomadic Lakai tribe of Uzbekistan, historically produced for ceremonial horse trappings and dowry collections.

These textiles are typically constructed using fine silk or wool threads stitched onto a cotton, wool, or silk foundation using chain stitch or cross-stitch techniques, often trimmed with hand-woven fringe.

Authentic early 20th-century Lakai embroideries feature distinctive graphic motifs such as dynamic boteh shapes, solar emblems, and tribal symbols in bold contrasting colours, created with natural-dyed yarns.

An antique tribal textile can be mounted in a shadow box frame as statement wall art, displayed over a sideboard, or draped over furniture to introduce texture and historic narrative to a room.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight and humidity. Gentle vacuuming through a fine mesh screen helps remove dust, while professional textile conservation is recommended for structural repairs.
