 Provenance:

Acquired by Bayer from Bernheimer by Carl Duisberg prior to 1930 –

Condition report :

Partial age damage and surface change due to many years of presentation in the park, very solid and stable, perfectly functional condition as a large planter or would adapt to water feature .

Literature :

The lotus flower (hasu) in Japan symbolizes purity and enlightenment, rising untouched from the muddy waters to bloom in beauty. It reflects the Buddhist path to awakening, where one transcends worldly impurities to achieve clarity and wisdom. The lotus, with its beauty, embodies spiritual growth and the pursuit of inner peace. The blooming of the lotus is a highly anticipated event in Japan, especially in Buddhist temples, during the summer months. This fleeting bloom is a reminder of the transient nature of life, encouraging reflection on the impermanence of existence. As the lotus flourishes, it symbolizes the beauty of embracing the present moment and the importance of spiritual mindfulness. Its brief life, blooming in the morning and fading by afternoon, urges us to rise above life’s struggles, finding strength in the cycle of renewal and transformation.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically crafted during the Edo and Meiji periods, Japanese bronze temple vases were created as ceremonial vessels for Buddhist temples and private estate gardens, incorporating symbolic motifs from nature and mythological creatures such as dragons.

These monumental vessels were cast from heavy copper-alloy bronze using lost-wax (cire perdue) or multi-piece sand casting methods, followed by hand-chasing of details and chemical patination.

Authentic Meiji bronze items display sharp hand-chased relief work, substantial weight, clear casting marks inside the vessel, and genuine surface oxidisation or verdigris patina from age and exposure.

A monumental bronze urn serves as a dramatic structural focal point when positioned in a double-height entry hall, placed within a light-filled conservatory, or incorporated into a formal garden scheme as a fountain basin.

Outdoor bronze metalwork should be periodically rinsed with clean water, brushed free of debris, and treated with a microcrystalline wax coating to preserve the underlying patina from environmental weathering.
