Early Autumn in Provence, Ca 1890, Luminous Impressionist Landscape, French Plein Air Oil on Board

19th century
Description

Frederic Montenard was born in Paris into a family with ancient roots in Provence. He studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris, and with the symbolist master Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, He made his début at the Salon in 1872, and in 1883 achieved great success when two of his paintings where acquired by the French state. In 1889, he won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle and a and a year later was integral in helping to found the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

In his early forties, Montenard felt a pull to return to the lands where his family originated. This is where the present painting was created, painted almost certainly en plein air, on the motif. His love for the South of France is clearly visible, as he captures the colours and the light of an early autumn day in Provence beautifully with almost pointillist brushstrokes. In the background, we see the Alpilles mountain range, just South of Avignon.

Montenard drew on landscapes and scenes of Provençal life for the themes of his large decorative compositions, commissioned for several buildings, notably for the Palais des Arts in Marseille. In 1900, he produced two paintings for the main hall of the Le Train bleu restaurant at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. Paintings by the artists are in the public collections of the Brignoles County Museum, the Chantilly Condé Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of Draguignan, La Rochelle, Marseille, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and many others.

Our oil on board measures 37.5 cm x 32 cm and is signed at the lower left. Presented in its beautiful original frame, the overall framed size is 63 x 48 cm.
