This atmospheric river view looks so strikingly modern that you would be forgiven for thinkiing that the artist might still be alive. When I first saw it from afar, I wondered if it was a work by Fernand Herbo - who lived from 1905 to 1995!

Well, absolutely not - the painting dates from circa the late 1870s. It is a picture by

Paul Jouanny (1839-1924) an artist belonging to that second generation of plein ari painters who renewed the art of landscape. Along with Charles Beauverie, Léonide Bourges and Pierre Emmanuel Damoye had been in Charles Daubigny's close circle, spending much time at Daubigny's house and studio at Auvers sur Oise.

Jouanny's subject of predilection were rivers: he loved painting both the Oise and the Seine, at Paris and Saint Honorine and all the to Rouen, via Vernon, Giverny and La Roche Guyon.

Works by Jouanny are now in Normandy museums, and his work has been shown in the "Normandie Impressionniste" festival.

Our painting by Jouanny is not signed, but its style and format are very distinctive.The canvas bears on the verso the stamp of colour merchand Félix Voisinot (1876-1881), who, according to specialist Pascal Labreuche, supplied Jouanny"s canvasses.

Our oil on canvas has been cleaned and restored and measures 40 x 70 cm. The overall framed size is 45 x 75 cm
