A Jetty in Provence, Ca 1925: The South of France: Mediterranean Cote D'azur Seascape Oil on Panel Painting

1920 - 1940
Description

A wonderfully luminous painting by Jean Julian (1888-1974), a master colourist from the South of France.

Originally from Marseilles, Jean Julien studied with Fernand Cormon at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris but kept the Mediterranean firmly in his heart. He was friends with writer Marcel Pagnol and actor Fernandel who were both also from Marseille, and a member of the Association des Marseillais de Paris.

Guy Dornand, the art historian who was a specialist of the works of Picasso and Maurice Utrillo, called Jean Julien "the ambassador of Provence in Paris" and famously wrote "listen, yes, listen to his paintings: you will hear the chirping of crickets"

Writer Francoise de Perthuis noted :

"It is with good reason that an important gallery on the left bank titled the exhibition of Julien's works "Coup de soleil" : Marseillais by origin, Julien has full sun his palette. "

Works by the artist are in museums of Marseilles, Arles, Paris and in numerous city halls in the South of France.

Jean Julien had a notable one man show titled "La Provence" at the Galerie Georges Petit in 1927.

He exhibited at the Salon of French artists in Paris, obtaining a silver medal in 1921 and gold medal in 1928. The oil on panel presented here dates from this very period, the late 1920s or 1930s. Measuring 46 x 55 cm, the overall framed size is 60 x 69 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Seascapes from this era often feature expressive brushwork, structured compositions, and vibrant colour palettes designed to capture atmospheric light and regional Mediterranean scenery.

Artists frequently used solid wood panels or composite boards coated with a gesso primer, applying oil paints bound with linseed oil to achieve durable visual depth and texture.

Authentic period works typically display natural age-related craquelure, surface oxidisation, authentic artist signatures, and consistent wear along the edges of the wooden substrate.

Position the artwork on a focal wall above minimalist furniture or within a neutral gallery wall to allow the historic colour palette to contrast with modern interior tones.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoid liquid solvents, and keep the artwork in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and severe humidity fluctuations.
