White Birches in Provence: 19th Century Mediterranean Landscape, the South of France, French Oil on Canvas

19th century
Description

Many of you will know that I love the luminosity of mediterranean landscapes, and here is a very rare, early and special one. It dates from the 1870s, and was painted in the pays d'Aix, between Aix en Provence and Marseilles on the coast. It is a work by Provençal master Joseph Collas, a native of Aix en Provence. Born in 1841, Collas studied with Emile Loubon - who was also known for his panoramic landscapes of Provence - and exhibited widely, at the Paris salon from 1863 to 1902. and at the Galerie Jules Olive in Marseille. Works by Collas can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts of Marseille, where there is notably a charcoal drawing which looks as if it could be study for the magnificent white birch in the foreground of our painting!

Our oil on canvas, measures 33 x 46 cm and is signed at the lower left. It is presented in its original Napoleon III period lacquered frame. The overall framed size is 55 x 68 cm.

While the original frame, with minor wear and tear is gorgeous, a lighter, gilded period frame would be available if you felt this would better suit our interior - please feel free to enquire.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French landscape painting was marked by a shift towards outdoor observation, popularized by schools such as Barbizon and later the Impressionists. Artists focused on natural lighting, countryside scenery, and textured paint application to capture realistic topographical atmosphere.

Paintings from this era were typically constructed using hand-stretched linen canvas primed with gesso, painted with oil pigments bound in linseed oil, and mounted on wooden keys and stretcher bars.

Authentic period works display natural age craquelure across the paint layer, darkening or yellowing of the original varnish, oxidation on the wooden stretcher frames, and signs of age-appropriate hand construction on the reverse.

An antique landscape oil painting can be styled above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or console table to create an accent focal point. Pairing historical artwork with minimalist furniture or neutral wall palettes provides balance between traditional depth and contemporary clarity.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust gentle surfaces with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and consult a professional fine art conservator for surface cleaning or varnish removal.
