A rare and evocative oil on canvas by the Spanish-Belgian woman artist Mercédès Legrand (1893-1945), whose life and career were as vibrant and tragic as her art. A pioneer of her time, she moved comfortably between the avant-garde circles of Brussels and Paris, exhibiting alongside titans such as Raoul Dufy, Georges Rouault and André Lhote. She was one of the first female artists to be commissioned for a public World War I memorial and was a co-founder of the avant-garde magazine Héliante.
 
Mercedes was notably included in the landmark 1937 exhibition ''Les femmes artistes d’Europe exposent au Jeu de Paume,'' representing the vanguard of female painters in Europe. Our oil on canvas, depicting a southern village street and dating from the early 1940s, was most likely painted near Avignon, where the artist and her Jewish husband sought refuge during the Nazi Occupation.
