A rare and evocative oil on canvas by the Spanish-Belgian woman artist Mercédès Legrand (1893-1945), whose life and career were as vibrant and tragic as her art. A pioneer of her time, she moved comfortably between the avant-garde circles of Brussels and Paris, exhibiting alongside titans such as Raoul Dufy, Georges Rouault and André Lhote. She was one of the first female artists to be commissioned for a public World War I memorial and was a co-founder of the avant-garde magazine Héliante.
Mercedes was notably included in the landmark 1937 exhibition ''Les femmes artistes d’Europe exposent au Jeu de Paume,'' representing the vanguard of female painters in Europe. Our oil on canvas, depicting a southern village street and dating from the early 1940s, was most likely painted near Avignon, where the artist and her Jewish husband sought refuge during the Nazi Occupation. It is as if the work captures the quiet, unassuming, yet enduring side of resistance. The figures—a child playing i...n the quiet road and a young girl leaning against a pale, textured wall—bring a sense of gentle domesticity to the landscape. Her mastery of impasto creates a sculptural depth that was highly praised by contemporary art critics.
Mercedes Legrand''s life ended abruptly in 1945 due to chemical poisoning from nitric acid fumes used in her pioneering work with enamels and ceramics. Today, her work is held in prestigious collections, including the Centre Pompidou (Bibliothèque Kandinsky), the Musée Calvet in Avignon, the Beaux–Arts Mons, the Musée de La Piscine in Roubaix and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège. Due to her untimely death, her work is rare and hard to come by.
Our oil on canvas is signed at the lower right. and measures 46 x 55 cm. Presented in a whitened oak frame, the overall size is 52 x 61 cm.
