Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

A dog grate is an open fire basket designed to burn coal or wood, featuring a projecting iron frame and decorative front legs. The nautilus or barrel-backed design gained prominence during the late Georgian and Regency periods, offering improved heat reflection into the room.

These fireplace inserts are primarily constructed from heavy-duty cast iron for the firebox and structural elements, combined with polished brass or ormolu for decorative mounts, finials, and front fenders to create a contrasting metallic aesthetic.

Authentic pieces feature heavy sand-cast iron components with hand-filed surfaces, threaded bolts with square-head nuts, makers marks or registration numbers, and natural signs of heat oxidisation and wear within the firebox rather than modern welding.

A period dog grate serves as a striking focal point within a functioning fireplace or as a decorative hearth feature filled with birch logs, dried botanicals, or pillar candles to introduce texture and historical character to a room.

Cast iron should be maintained using a specialist grate polish or black lead applied with a stiff brush to prevent rust, while brass elements can be gently cleaned with a mild soapy solution and a soft cloth to preserve their aged patina.
