Antique Kyrgyz 'Tush Kyiz' Embroidered Yurt Wall Hanging, Circa 1900/20.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 5ft 6in x 3ft 4in (167 x 101cm).

Antique Kyrgyz 'tush kyiz', embroidered yurt wall hanging.

Circa 1900/20.

Tush Kyiz are elaborately embroidered wall hangings, traditionally made in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan by women to commemorate the marriage of a son or daughter. The colours and designs are chosen to symbolize Kyrgyz traditions and rural life. Designs are sometimes dated and signed by the weaver upon completion of the work, which may take years to finish. The tush kyiz is hung in the yurt over the marriage bed of the couple, and symbolize their pride in their Kyrgyz tradition.

This fine example has a very detailed design in soft pastel colours on a black cotton ground, it is the tradition to leave the lower end of the panel un-finished.

The condition is good with only very slight signs of use and a few small spots of damage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Tush Kyiz is a traditional embroidered wall hanging created by Kyrgyz women to celebrate marriage and family milestones, historically hung inside yurts to decorate living spaces.

These textiles are typically hand-stitched onto a base fabric of wool or cotton using silk or cotton embroidery threads, featuring chain stitch or tambour techniques to form symbolic motifs.

Authentic pieces display hand-worked embroidery, natural dye variations, geometric and floral circular medallion motifs, and a characteristic open-bottomed central panel layout.

A Tush Kyiz can be mounted on a neutral wall as a focal textile art piece, hung behind a sideboard, or framed behind protective glass to add texture and history to contemporary spaces.

Keep the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, support its weight evenly when displaying, avoid washing with water, and consult a professional textile conservator for cleaning.
