Georgian Composite Stem Candlestick

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, hand-blown, pedestal stem candlestick dating from the mid 18th century, c1750.

The candlestick is in reasonable to good condition. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250+ years of use.

The candlestick has an octagonal cylinder-shaped candle holder bowl measuring 3.5 cm (1.4 inches) in diameter at the eight-sided rim. The candle holder is vertically cut with eight large diamond-shaped slices. The bowl sits on two merises, a knop containing air tears, a small drop knop and an eight-sided moulded pedestal stem with diamonds to the shoulders. The stem ends in five collars and a second teared knop above a small basal knop. The stem leads to a domed and cut foot which measures 12.2 cm (4.9 inches) in diameter and carries a rough pontil mark to the underside. The candlestick is 22 cm (8.8 inches) in height. There are a number of small chips out of the cut edge of the foot, and a couple of flake chips to the underside edge of the foot; nothing out of the usual for an unrestored example of this type. Please view the image of the foot closely before buying.

It would be a very expensive candlestick without the chipping. English lead glass. It weighs 445 g. (~ 1 lb.).
