Subject & Medium

An exquisite Neoclassical French sentimental brooch, c.1760, depicting the myth of Cupid and Psyche. The oval jewel is formed from finely worked 14ct gold appliqué, set against a woven crimson silk ground and preserved beneath a domed glass cover. The reverse is crafted in silver-gilt and fitted with its original extended steel pin and open C-clasp. This combination of precious metal, textile, and glass exemplifies the refined sentimental jewels of the late Georgian period.

Composition & Technique

Gold appliqué relief: Delicately cut sheets of 14ct gold (tested, no hallmark), forming the intimate figures of Cupid and Psyche.

Silk ground: A crimson silk panel symbolising passion, loyalty, and enduring love.

Protective glazing: Domed glass shielding the delicate composition, remarkably preserved after more than two centuries.

Silver-gilt construction: The reverse crafted from silver, gilded for contrast and elegance, providing strength and durability.

Original fittings: Retains its elongated pin and open C-clasp, characteristic of the Georgian era.

This mixed-media technique—gold over silk beneath glass—was highly prized in sentimental jewellery, merging luxury craftsmanship with symbolic storytelling.

Classical Allegory

The brooch depicts the legendary embrace of Cupid (Eros), god of love, and Psyche, the mortal maiden whose beauty rivalled Venus. Their love, forbidden and tested, ultimately triumphed when Psyche was granted immortality, allowing them to be united forever.

The figures are shown beside a classical altar, inscribed in French with “La Joie et l’Amitié” (“Joy and Friendship”). This inscription reflects the Neoclassical ideal of love ennobled by friendship, tempered by joy, and sanctified by divine approval.

To Georgian society, immersed in Enlightenment thought and Neoclassical taste, the tale of Cupid and Psyche symbolised the union of body and soul, desire and devotion—an allegory perfectly suited to tokens exchanged between lovers and friends.

Condition

Fair to good antique condition.

Gold appliqué intact but shows wear.

Red silk ground with areas of fading and loss.

Reverse retains original fittings (hinge, pin, clasp), fully functional though the pin is slightly bent.

Glass cover with surface scratches.

Some tarnish and gilt wear on the reverse.

Overall structurally sound, with condition consistent with age and use.

Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD operates on a Delivery Duty Unpaid (DDU) basis which means that the International buyer is responsible for any import duties, taxes & customs clearance charges and any other customs charges which may be necessary to release an order from international customs.

Following the UK leaving the EU on 1st January 2021 (BREXIT) there have been some changes to customs & duty charges for EU customers. Tax and import duty varies from country to country so we recommend you check with your local tax office to see if any fees will be payable.

If the customer refuses to pay any duty and customs charges and the parcel is returned to sender all shipping charges will be deducted from any refund.
