Description

This magnificent bag, woven by tribes within the Khamseh Confederacy in Fars, south-western Persia, was undoubtedly made for containing either wooden spoons, water-pipes or wooden spindles. The quality of the soumak weaving technique on the face indicates it was made by a weaver at the height of her profession and a highly-prized little bag. The bag is complete with madder-red, plain-weave back, showing abrash where the weaver used different shades of colour and decorated with tassels on the face.

Size: 48cm x 29cm (1' 7" x 11").

A tribal spoon bag is a narrow, finely woven textile pouch historically used by nomadic confederacies in Persia to store household utensils, pipes, or personal belongings during seasonal migrations.

These pieces were typically crafted using handspun wool for both the warp and weft, often employing supplementary weft-float or slit-weave techniques, and dyed using natural vegetable and insect dyes.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating the irregularity and warmth of natural dyes, the density of the hand-knotted or woven structure, traditional tribal iconography, and natural wear consistent with nomadic use.

Antique tribal textiles are frequently mounted behind UV-protective glass or hung directly on neutral walls as fibre art, adding texture, rich colour, and historical depth to modern spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding excessive moisture, and occasionally vacuuming gently through a mesh screen on a low setting to remove dust.
