Late 17thc Oak Bureau (Small)

17th century
Description

A good late 17th century oak bureau ( desk) c1680 with a well and secret drawers.

It measures only 84cms wide. 93cms h and 51cms deep

In great condition for its age with no problems and a great small size.

The well was originally designed in yesteryear to be a secret place for hiding valuables etc.

In the days of candlelight it probably worked perfectly and even today ?

The brass handles are in our opinion later 18thc replacements.

The colour is rich as you would expect for a desk which is over 300 years old.

The lock works as well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developing in late seventeenth-century England, the bureau combined a sloping writing flap enclosing fitted small drawers with a chest of drawers beneath, serving as a compact writing station.

Pieces from this era were constructed primarily from solid native oak, utilizing hand-cut dovetail joints, thick drawer linings, iron lock mechanisms, cast brass handles, and turned bun feet.

Authentic indicators include hand-planed timber surfaces, uneven saw marks, original wooden lopers supporting the writing flap, thick hand-cut dovetails, and historic wear around keyholes.

A compact oak bureau functions effectively as a home office workstation or hallway storage piece, blending with neutral wall tones and understated modern lighting.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain timber hydration and prevent moisture loss.
