Size: 2ft 6in x 1ft 11in (76 x 58cm).

Antique saddle bag face by the Afshar tribe with large boteh design.

Circa 1880.

The bag face has three rows of large floral boteh on a dark indigo blue ground, the ivory ground floral border contrasts well with the darker field. Note the traditional Afshar brocaded closing lappets at the top.

The bag face is in good condition with even wear and medium / low pile, there are some historic losses to the lower corners.

An Afshar saddlebag face, or khorjin front, is the decorative front panel of a double cargo bag crafted by nomadic Afshar tribes in Persia. Traditionally used to carry goods across rugged terrain, these textiles are appreciated for their intricate geometric motifs and rich heritage.

These textiles were hand-woven using hand-spun wool pile knotted on a wool or cotton warp foundation. Nomadic weavers utilised locally sourced vegetable dyes, such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues, producing durable yarns with subtle tone variations.
