Baluch rugs are hand-knotted textiles traditionally produced by nomadic and semi-nomadic Baluchi tribes inhabiting the borderlands of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. These pieces are characterised by deep, saturated dark palettes, geometric motifs, and portable dimensions often used as prayer mats or sitting carpets.

Traditional Baluch weavings typically feature wool pile hand-knotted onto wool or occasionally cotton warp and weft foundations. Natural dyes derived from roots, plants, and insects were universally employed to achieve rich tones of brown, indigo, madder red, and orange.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries can be identified by the handle and suppleness of the wool, asymmetrical Persian knots, braided or kilim-weave ends, and the distinct use of dark brown ground colours that often display characteristic oxidisation due to iron-mordant dyes.

These versatile textiles function effectively as accent floor coverings in narrow hallways, as small entrance mats, or mounted as wall art to protect them from high-traffic wear. Their rich earthy tones and geometric designs complement both minimalist modern rooms and eclectic, layered spaces.

Preservation requires regular, gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to protect the aged pile and fringed ends. Professional hand-washing is recommended periodically, and pieces should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the natural dyes.
