Description

A rare set of 4 Old Sheffield Plated candlesticks with drawn wire lyre-shaped stems. Bearing no makers marks but dating to c1770-1780. This is truly an elegant set of candlesticks. Wonderfully designed stems on oval bases and with removable sconces.

The condition is good overall and the plating is in very good order. One candlestick has a later drilled extractor hole and a slight split to the seam. A couple of the candlesticks are everso slightly misshapen but this does not detract from the overall elegance of the set.

Height approx 32cm

Base measures approx 15.5cm x 11cm.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating developed in the 18th century, created by fusing a layer of silver onto a copper core, predominantly produced between 1740 and the mid-19th century before electroplating was introduced.

These items are constructed using fused metal sheets of sterling silver and copper, often featuring weighted bases filled with pitch, resin, or wood, and assembled using soldering and hand-finishing techniques.

Authentic pieces often reveal a thin line of copper showing along the cut edges or wear points, lack modern silver hallmarks, and exhibit hand-beaten or soldered seams rather than seamless modern machine manufacturing.

They can be integrated as sophisticated centrepieces on dining tables, displayed on sideboards, or paired with contemporary minimalist decor to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

They should be cleaned sparingly using a very soft cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the delicate silver layer and expose the underlying copper base.
