Description

This magnificent and rare chanteh (vanity-bag) was made by Timuri tribes, possibly in the Khaf region, within the borderlands of north-eastern Persia and north-western Afghanistan, circa 1870-1880.

The front knotted-pile face of this magnificent bag depicts what appears to be a sunburst lozenge on a deep indigo-blue ground and surrounded by stylised dragon and birds-heads symbols. The back face, also in knotted-pile, a rare find in these small bags, contains diagonal bands of stylised 'botehs', several rows in a beautiful sky-blue colour. The weaver has depicted four '8-pointed stars' on the base of the bag symbolising protection to the contents. The third photo shows the bag completely opened-up, giving a clearer view of the whole piece.

This is a fabulous and very collectible little bag - one of the best from this tribal group.

Size: 46cm x 46cm (1' 6" x 1' 6") or 46cm x 94cm (1' 6" x 3' 1") open.
