Description

Antique Stauffer & Co IWC silver pocket watch.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. Although Stauffer & Co produced movements in their own right, they also sourced a smaller number of movements from IWC and possibly from other watch companies. This particular movement has the Stauffer & Co mark, together with the Peerless name which tells us that the movement was made by IWC (International Watch Company).

The movement also carries the IWC serial number which dates it back to around 1903.

The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which is engraved with the wording, 'P Krakauer, Barnsley'. The Krakauer family were Prussian Jewish immigrants and Max Krakauer opened a jewellery shop on Church Street in Barnsley town centre.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are Continental hallmarks for 935 silver inside both of the case backs. Overall, the case is in good condition with a few little marks but nothing too detrimental.

The glass lens is in lovely condition (there is lots of reflection in the photos because of the curved lens).

The dial has a hairline running up from the centre but it is faint. There are a couple of chips to the very edge but they are covered by the bezel. Pin-set blued steel hands.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Date of Manufacture

The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this Antique Silver Pocket Watch to the 1900s.

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Stauffer Son & Co. was a major importer of Swiss watches into the UK, frequently collaborating with prestigious manufacturers like International Watch Co. (IWC) to produce high-grade movements for the British market.

These timepieces typically featured sterling silver or gold cases, enamel dials with painted numerals, tempered steel hands, and intricate brass or gilt mechanical movements protected by glass crystals.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks inside the case for silver standards and maker marks, checking the serial numbers on the movement against manufacturer records, and inspecting the hand-finished mechanical components.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed on a dedicated desk stand, within a glass cloche on a mantelpiece, or stored securely in a vintage leather valet tray.

Keep mechanical watches away from moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations, wind them gently at consistent times if operational, and have them professionally serviced every few years by a specialist horologist.
