"Heritage Quality Without the High Street Mark-up"

Hodgson Antiques (www.hodgsonantiques.co.uk) has been in the antique trade and dealing independently since 2012. Based in Derbyshire countryside operating solely online, we specialise in antique and vintage lighting, table lamps, ceiling lights, chandeliers, wall lights and lanterns together with some selectively sourced decorative items. We source items from around the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.

We believe that acquiring exceptional, fully restored period lighting shouldn't require paying premium high-street showroom prices. By operating entirely online and focusing our resources into our own dedicated restoration workshop, we have completely reimagined the traditional antique gallery model. We have a significant structural pricing advantage over traditional brick-and-mortar storefronts, which enables us to offer the exact high quality and meticulous restoration you find in the high street showrooms – delivered directly from our workshop at transparent competitive trade prices passing substantial savings onto our customers.

All our antique lights are fully overhauled, professionally cleaned, rewired and PAT tested to UK standards ready for installation. They are supplied with period-style matching aged fixing brass screws, fittings.

Our lighting is safely wrapped in heavy-duty protective packaging and dispatched the next day via premium tracked courier within mainland UK (delivery charge applies at checkout). As an independent workshop, we highly appreciate direct bank transfers (BACS). If you prefer to pay directly via bank transfer, we will happily waive the delivery fee as a thank you. Please contact us directly via the email link or phone number below before clicking 'Buy Now' to receive your free shipping invoice

FAQs

French Empire style lighting emerged during the early 19th century under Napoleons rule, heavily influenced by classical Greco-Roman motifs, symmetry, and military triumphs. Designs from this period frequently incorporated symbols such as swans, laurels, eagles, and urns rendered in gilt bronze or brass.

Authentic period pieces were typically constructed from cast bronze or brass, often utilizing mercury gilding or ormolu techniques to achieve a rich, durable golden finish. Components were individually cast and hand-chased before being assembled with threaded fasteners or pins.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the casting quality, hand-chasing details, and patination of the metal. Genuine older pieces display natural wear, tool marks, and appropriate oxidation patterns in recessed areas, contrasting with modern mass-produced reproductions.

These fixtures can be incorporated into contemporary settings by mounting them symmetrically flanking a mirror, fireplace, or headboard to add architectural interest and layered ambient lighting. Pairing traditional metals with clean, modern walls creates a sophisticated contrast.

Preserve the metal by gently dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can strip the historic patination. If rewiring is necessary for modern safety standards, consult a professional electrician experienced with antique fixtures.
