Karabagh Runner With European Design, Caucasus, Circa 1870, 4.57m X 1.17m

This stunning runner is a fine example of a small group of carpets and runners produced by the Caucasian weavers in the Karabagh region which reflect a European aesthetic, but with the angularity and dramatic colouring one associates with the Caucasus. At the end of the 19th century, the presence of substantial numbers of Russian military and bureaucratic personnel in the Caucasus influenced the styles of rugs and carpets that were being woven in the villages and workshops. This runner with its design of roses and dramatic golden swags is clearly a reference to French decorative styles so popular with the Russians. The brown background which has corroded in places gives the design a relief or three-dimensional effect in places.
