A stunning antique burr walnut chest on chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is superb, this is a great size and offers lots of storage space. It has a serpentine front, with a pull out sliding shelf in the middle. There is a lovely moulded cornice, the drawers have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints, and this sits on bracket feet. The drawer fronts are cross banded, this has high quality brass handles and escutcheons.

We have had this re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is excellent for its age. The burr walnut grain patterns and colours are gorgeous throughout.

The top lifts right off the base and this comes in two halves for ease of transport.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The chest on chest, or tallboy, emerged in the late seventeenth century during the reign of William and Mary, designed to maximise vertical storage space while maintaining a compact footprint in domestic interiors.

Authentic period pieces typically feature oak or pine secondary timbers faced with highly figured decorative veneers such as burr walnut or mahogany, joined with hand-cut dovetails and fitted with solid brass hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining drawer construction for hand-cut dovetails, checking for uneven timber shrinkage, inspecting the grain alignment of the veneers, and looking for period-appropriate locks and fixings.

Pairing this form of dark wood antique with minimalist contemporary decor creates a sophisticated contrast, allowing the rich grain patterns and historical craftsmanship to serve as a focal point in a bedroom or hallway.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood without damaging the historic finish.
