A George I Wanut Chest on Stand

18th century
Description

A good George I book matched walnut tallboy with double cross banding around all drawers.

I believe these to be the original handles and escutcheons. Very nice condition throughout. The last image is with a flash to better reveal the depth of patina it boasts.

A superb example of the period.

66 inches tall 42 inches 22 inches deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George I chest on stand, dating from around 1714 to 1727, is an 18th-century storage piece comprising an upper chest of drawers mounted on a raised lower stand. These pieces typically feature walnut veneers, crossbanding, brass drop handles, arched lower aprons, and turned or cabriole legs linked by decorative stretchers.

Early 18th-century examples were constructed with deal or oak secondary carcass timbers faced with figured walnut or burr walnut veneers. Drawers were fitted with hand-cut dovetail joints, oak linings, and cast brass escutcheons and drop handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, wide hand-cut dovetail jointing, original drawer linings showing wood shrinkage, and period-correct brass fittings. The underside of the stand and rear panels should show age-appropriate oxidisation and uneven wear rather than uniform modern machine finishing.

A walnut chest on stand provides vertical storage and a visual focal point in hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms. Pairing rich walnut tones alongside muted modern wall colours, neutral textiles, or contemporary artwork creates an effective contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Preserve walnut veneers by keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, or bleaching. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain the natural patina.
